Cause And Effect - WW1

Cause and Effect - WW1

A world supposedly at peace
In a  supposed Golden age
Almost in a trice suffused
By a mood of terrible rage.
A King, a Kaiser, a Tsar,
Cousins of the royal blood
Enjoyed their friendship in
A spirit of regal brotherhood;

But down in the Balkans
Anarchy raised its ugly head,
A few well, placed shots and
Franz-Ferdinand was dead.
Suddenly those cousins
Weren't friends any more.
The inevitable happened,
The world went off to war.

Four years three month two weeks later
They counted up the terrible cost
A land ravaged by war,
Nine million lives lost,
One cousin sent to exile,
One cousin overthrown,
One cousin still safe
And secure on his throne.

They made a peace of attrition
Humiliation, revenge and more
Which laid the foundation
For that Second World War.
All over the world mothers,
And widows, and orphans wept
While for a few short years
Europe uneasily slept.
