MY TRUE IDENTITY
I had to reveal my true identity at the mall a few days before Christmas
I was in the china department waiting to be waited on
A grandmother with two small children came passed me
She was so worn and frazzled looking I felt sad for her
The little boy was maybe five and the girl was maybe six or so
Their little hands were busy touching and moving everything they saw
An hour later I headed to the register to be checked out
There they were - the tired grandmother with the children
They were still driving her nuts
" Don't touch that" - "Put that down" - "Come stand by me'
Grannie kept repeating
Me - being me - who does not know when to keep her mouth shut
said "you have your hands full with these two live wires"
"They are really good kids" was her reply
by this time the children were looking at me with interest
"Yes" said I "I was at the back of the store and saw you
You know I will have to report their behavior to Santa - I am one of his elves
Their eyes grew big - they were not sure whether to believe me or not
"You don't look or dress like an elf" the boy said
"Of course I don't - if I came dressed like an elf everyone
would know I am an elf and be on their best behavior
The little boy came closer and looked up at me and said
"Let me see your ears - You don't have elf ears"
I explained I had my fake ears on so I could blend in with the crowd
I also told them there were lots and lots of elves dressed like people
We are in all the stores all through the year
We work for Santa and send in our reports stating who is naughty and who is nice
When the grandmother was finished with paying for her items
they started out of the store
The children walked close to her side with their hands in their pockets
They looked over their shoulder to see if I was watching - I was - I waved goodbye to them
