They Say the World is Very Old
They say the world is very old,
That it passed through fire and flood and snow,
If it has I cannot tell,
I only know they say it's so.
They say the world will pass away,
When ages roll beyond mere man,
This for certain I will not know,
I know tis never in my plan.
The dirt I sift between my hands,
Which number I could never know,
Someday will cover o'er my bones,
And winds my dust shall surely blow.
Yet I think not the world so old,
Though fire and flood and freezing snow,
Have passed the tired and muddy world,
And has no elsewhere left to go.
Perhaps it's grown tired of men,
Who've worn over long their stay,
Their toils have left the furrows deep,
And now tis time to pay.
Nay the earth is good and so is man,
Though long we wasted through the night,
Our harvest's born the golden grain,
And now it's time to do what's right.
The Maker said as much to man,
Go forth and fruitful be,
Thy harvests come thy Will be done,
Tis time to set them free.
They say the world is very old,
That it passed through fire and flood and snow,
If it has I cannot tell,
I only know it soon must go.
