Let It Be On The Mountain

If only we could know the grandeur and the sanctity of Moses last moments as he stood high on Pisgah and viewed the promise of God, then we would understand the punctuation mark that was placed at the end of Moses life. Not a period or a question mark but rather a comma, a pause to reflect, this is not the end.

Deuteronomy 34

1And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,

2And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

3And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.

4And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

6And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

7And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

8And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moses climbs the mountain and what an assent it is, just he and God, Up the steep escarpment, staff in his hand, expectation in his heart, unwavering faith in his God.

As he breaks the summit he lets out a heavy sigh as if all the weight of all the years have just now been lifted off his shoulders, he takes a deep breath of the cool mountain air and there before his eyes he beholds the promise land. A rush of exhileration fills him as he takes it all in.

And though is not ill or taken with age he slumps into the arms of God and dies. Then God himself scooped out the earth, Lays Moses down in that long grave, covers him over as a parent would a child, there on the mountain top Moses dies.

And God remembers where he has buried Moses.

Now is it not time to sing a plaintive hymn for Moses and mourn his last days, For he has failed to enter in to Canaan. Wait a moment, this is not a sad day, we have no need to weep, Because Moses life has ended on the mountaintop.
