OUT ON THE ROAD
Behind the wheel
there is a sense of
weightlessness and
unadulterated freedom...
...the strange sensation
of floating along the asphalt
lifts me away from my cares
and the solitary sadness.
It's a healing,
albeit a fleeting one.
In and out of
the shadows of trees,
along country roads that twist
and rise, then drop into nowhere...
...sunshine warms my face
though the breeze across my neck
is chill and the sweet smell
of autumn gets into my pores.
I begin to feel like
I could fly at any moment.
Humming along with
the drone of the tires,
cicadas marry their odd melody
to the birds and the wind...
...and just for an instant
my mind is washed of thought,
drifting up amid the clouds and
blue sky like a meadowlark.
It's pure joy that
transcends the day;
my blessings become manifest
out on the road.
