When the Lights Dim
A poem about attaining fame and how fickle it is.....
He sings his songs up on the stage
seems he's become the latest rage.
He gives his heart and soul away
all he wants to do is sing and play.
At home she calls him on the phone.
“Come home soon I'm all alone.”
but he never hears those tender pleas
bright lights and stardom's all he sees.
Too many days, too many years
too many smiles, too many tears.
Those bitter dreams he can't forsake
but all they did was take and take.
A simpler way is what he needs
his mind says, but he never heeds
She says, “I want you here with me.”
but it's the music that sets him free.
So on he plays to those empty faces
and travels to so many different places
never knowing what he's left behind.
Something's out there he must find.
When the spotlights finally dim
and his audience is done with him
he goes back where he belongs
with his guitar and all his songs.
Those bright lights reflecting in his eyes
are replaced by starlight in the skies
and he pulls her close to him
as the twilight starts to dim.
