village verse

School

I went to school when I was four
I'll never forget that big old door
That seemed to hold me there
But very soon I didn't care
The big thing that really worried me
I just couldn't write the number three
Make them blacker Miss Agar would say
But I kept them the palest shade of grey
So she wouldn't see that mine
Were just a wavy greyish line
I could do the numbers 1 to 10
Over and over and over again
But for months it troubled me
I couldn't write the number three
I have very great childhood recall
That's one of the earliest of them all
