village verse

stogie pie - withernwick

across the smithy yard
busy any week day
past the welding shop
it was a quite a way away
to the little old earth privy
under the churchyard trees
where I sat sometimes at night
with a 12 bore over my knees
sitting in the darkness
with the door open wide
listening for the cooing
coming from outside
that said a fat stogie
had landed for a rest
fresh roasted stogie
was just the best
trying to ensure
the paper work was done
before cocking and aiming
with dad's old gun
a visit to the privy was
quite often a winner
when we came back home
with a fresh stogie for dinner
