WAKING THE DEAD

**~** WAKING THE DEAD **~**

Driving to work on a cold dark morning
Before the day was due for dawning,
All along the lane lay the dead leaves there
Fallen from the trees leaving the branches bare.

They were caught in my headlights brown and gold
Laying on the floor all crisp and cold,
The tree had no use for them any more
So she just let them float on to the floor.

Just ahead of me a lorry had pulled in
The man had stopped to empty someone`s bin,
I pulled in behind him `cause I couldn`t get past
The bin emptied, the lorry moved off at last.

It gathered speed and the faster it went
Up in the air the dead leaves it sent,
They twisted and twirled and danced all around
Leaving their deathbed there on the ground.

Caught in my headlights it was a lovely sight
Swirling and swaying much to my delight,
A new lease of life is what the leaves found
Better than lying lifeless there on the ground.

All the way they danced to the lorry`s tune
The moon was fading and the sun would be up soon,
Then they fell to the ground back to their bed
I must say tho` it was like waking the dead.
