Waiting

You came out of the mist
And enchanted his life
So lovely did you appear
To his weary eyes and heart.
It was as if all his best dreams
Had suddenly been realised,
He smiled for the first time
In many, many months
And love stepped into his mind.
The world grew lighter and gentler
He saw patterns in the sky
And mysteries in the meadows
He swam the wide rivers of time
Never losing sight of your eyes
Or the face that filled his days.
He went down to the beach
And laughed into the oceans spray
But then dissolved in tears of longing
For something he could not explain.
Sea and sky merged into one,
The day faded into dusk
But you never came to him
As sunset coloured his eyes.
As he watches for you
Days become years and then centuries
His heart breaks a thousand times
Until it seems it will never heal again.
Yet his love does not flicker at all;
He believes you will return.
And so he waits in silence
With a hope that cannot die.
