 Who is the Watcher?

When I sit in meditation I seek to watch my thoughts float by.
In this discipline, I wonder who it is that is doing this watching?
If I am my thoughts, then who is this entity that is separate from my thoughts?
In this process of untangling my identity from the patterns that I believed were me,
I notice the calmness and the peacefulness of this moment of vision.
I see my ego as something alien to this place of peace,
As it is the driving force behind the thought patterns.
But who is the watcher?

The gap between becomes greater with just simply this realization,
As the ego pulls me into a place of seclusion from the rest of the universe.
This is all about me, my, and mine, I am I, an individual, protected by my ego;
But this internal force that watches this process is not separated.
With unity to all is felt, bringing the sensation of peace and tranquility;
The brain gets louder, shouting for its walls of division to be built up higher.
Ego shores up the holes in my walls which allow flow to begin, the watcher sits.
But who is this watcher?

The watcher  does not do battle, as it allows the ego to rant and rail;
For the watcher is building the platform in this eternal moment,
Where I can see the reality of time and my place in the eternal realms.
The watcher preserves this spot for escape from the onslaughts of life;
The possessive war against the creation can by observed without judgment.
This is a place of change; this is a place of peace; this is a place of reality.
The more time spent on the watchtower the more my freedom rings out.
But who is this watcher?

From the heights of the watchtower the passion play of my life plays out,
But this simple act of observation changes my actions and motivations.
I am beginning to recognize this place as the home of the real Fred within;
Connected to the universal soul of creation, not divided and separated.
It is me that is the watcher!
