The First Time I Saw Elvis
I was twelve and just learning that boys were important
My family rode the long distance to see Elvis who was performing in another city
Our seats were close to the stage and we could see clearly
Johnny Cash was his opening act
He was good --- but who could concentrate when you knew Elvis was back there behind the curtain
Then the announcer came out and introduced
~~~~~~~~~~ ELVIS ~~~~~~~~~~
My heart was beating 'Shake Rattle and Roll'
if possible it started beating faster - I thought I might swoon
His guitar hang around his shoulder
He had on a black shirt with a wide pink stripe on one side
He was just beautiful
He started with 'I'm All Shook Up'
I had never seen anyone move the way he did
~~~~~~~~~~
When he sang 'That's When Your Heartache Begins'
I wanted to run up there and wipe away the unseen tears in his eyes
It was hard to be still when he started on 'Blue Suede Shoes' & 'Don't be cruel'
My feet moved to the beat
Ahhhhhhhhhh ----------- delicious feelings I had never felt before
Then he sang 'I want you, I need you, I love you'
I was overwhelmed with ecstatic joy
~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~
Today I still play Elvis' music------------swooning in my heart as he sings
'I Was the One' and 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' and 'Are you sincere'
Ah, Elvis
He will always be the handsome young man, not much more than a boy himself
Singing his heart out on a stage in Clarksdale
with hips and legs that wouldn't be still
I will always 'Love You Tender'
