Poems for Lovers and Sinners

Email Poem | Today's Poetry

The Day I Went To War...

  Today I went to war

  boom, bang, boom...

went the guns and bombs all around me...

  Right boy's! shouted the Captain

  It was our time...

time to climb over the top

  and meet the enemy

with a tear running down my face

I thought of my mother and dad

  back home in old blighty

slowly I edged nearer to the ladder

I said good luck Billy, he said...

  see ya George boy...

One of my best mates from home

had been killed on the first day of the war

We went over the top for King and country

  Into No Man's Land...

And into the blazing inferno of Hell

My last thought, will we be remembered?
