LIFE IS LIKE A CANDLE

Photobucket

MOTHER CARRIES THE FIRST FLICKERS OF LIFE
FOR NINE FULL MONTHS UNTIL IT IS BORN
AND THEN IT BURSTS INTO A FULL FLAME
FROM THE MOMENT OF ITS BIRTHDAY MORN

WHILE YOUNG THE FLAME IS STEADY AND BRIGHT
AND STAYS THAT WAY UNDER ANGELS WINGS
ALONG THE WAY IT FALTERS NOW AND THEN
BUT RE-NEWS ITSELF AND SINGS

AS THE YEARS GO BY AND THE WICK BURNS LOW
ITS LIFE SLOWLY EBBS AWAY
TILL ALL THAT'S LEFT IS A BURNED OUT CANDLE
THAT GOD HAS SNUFFED OUT THAT DAY

THE CANDLE GIVES OFF ITS LAST WISPS OF SMOKE
THAT SLOWLY DRIFTS TO THE SKY
TO JOIN THE OTHER BREATHS OF LIFE
THAT ONCE WERE YOU AND I
