Locked in the SixtiesStuck in a sixty's time-warp, its music and its songs, Pop songs took a quantum leap to the decade it belongs, Leaving behind the bland, the boring and age old rhymes, Enter revolutionary rock groups, with their message for the times, Some say it began with the Beetles, but no group marked the start, But they changed music forever, the fab four just played their part, It started a British rock invasion across the Atlantic and North Sea, Capturing a generation, with a freedom of expression now the key, The Searchers, Freddie with his Dreamers, The Hollies and Moody Blues, The hits of Dusty Springfield, Helen Shapiro and Cilla made the news, The Kinks and Rolling Stones produce an avalanche of successful bands, But they needed the pirate radio stations for their music to advance, Americans began to harmonise, flowers in their hair was the go, The Mamas and Papas helped Scot McKenzie get going to San Francisco, Bob Dylan had laid the foundation, for protests songs to take the lead, While the Beach Boys and their surf songs set sail the Sloop John B, New groups from down under in that distant Antipodes, The Easybeats, the Seekers and Brisbane's own Bee Gees, Some songs became anthems, for the masses to keep in tone. Like Gerry and the Pacemakers and “You'll never walk alone”, The Animals were intriguing with “The House of the Rising Sun”, For Cliff Richard and the Shadows their “Summer Holiday” had begun, Tamla Motown then hit the bigtime, and dominated the scenes, For no group would ever come close to Diana and the Supremes, Burt Bacharach's lasting melodies, like “Trains and Boats and Planes”, Were recorded by many artists for their beautiful refrains, Simon and Garfunkel sang that they were “Homeward Bound” And gifted us a foretaste of their unique and haunting sound, Some were one hit wonders and some who made it rich, Some had great names like Dave, Dee, Dozey, Mick and Titch My fascination for the sixties, borders insanity so they say, As the crazy Napoleon X1V said “ They are coming to take me away” Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
