SONNET 3: Dupin's Art of Detection (wings2fly 12 31 2009)
“It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious
are always fanciful, and the truly imaginative
never otherwise than analytic”
SONNET 3: DUPIN'S ART OF DETECTION
An unnamed narrator's tale shall begin
In shelved Rue Montmartre, discovers his fate
Auguste Dupin is introduced herein
Unearthing facts through inquisitive trait
Fourth floor abode atrocity took place
Deaths in Rue Morgue met by intrusion
Dupin's mind freed from emotional case
There reaches ingenious conclusion
Perhaps it's something not occurred before?
Puzzle disentangled that which won't show
So outwit the Prefect! Dupin KNOWS more
Beyond unseen covert details there go
New riddles solved with methodical mind
Art of detection truths exposed in time
CRITIQUE REQUESTED
(Still not comfortable with iambic pentameter, and it shows in this 3rd sonnet,
but I'm getting better with practice)
DEFINITION OF MORGUE (French)
The word means visage, and was first applied to prison vestibules, where new criminals were placed to be scrutinized, so prison officials could come to recognize their faces and general appearance. I believe MORGUE in French is pronounced as “morgay”. Anyone familiar with French, please correct me if I'm wrong, because this will change the number of
syllables in line.
MONTMARTRE is two syllables, and in French sounds like "Moh-maght".
