It has been forty years
A magical story of it's own
More than forty years ago
My best friend from high school
Disappeared from the face of the earth
Last summer the phone rang
"You probably don't recognize this voice?"
I said my God Jim where have you been?
Too long a story to get into here
But together we met and discussed old memories
The day we were in summer school
We both needed Language Arts to graduate
Ms. Duff or whatever her name was a tough lady
You had to read and memorize
and recite 500 lines of poetry to pass her class
Not only that we had to do it in Summer school
I said by the way how did you do?
Shakespeare's works, Macbeth, and Chaucer somehow I made it
To this day it was like pulling teeth
So he said what poems did you memorize?
The Star Spangled banner--Casey at Bat
"If" by Rudyard Kipling and Now I lay me down to sleep
The Pledge of Allegiance and take me out to the ballpark
I believe he hit me hard.
Especially when I said which ones do you remember today?
