So as to not appearing to be trying
to be considered a hero that I am not
I served my four years between two wars
I entered in unstable peace after the Korean war
I was an emergency room medic
My tour was up just before Viet Nam
Without giving away classified information
It was not the friendly Korea of today
Twice I found myself in fear of life
and both times with guns pointed at my head
Roads were unclear terrain badly mapped.
We were transporting patients between hospitals
The driver of our ambulance had made a wrong turn
We were within three hundred yards of the DMZ
Less than three hundred yards we were in North Korea
When the shelling began we were in smoke
When the smoke cleared away our ambulance was surrounded
With a gun pointed at my head in broken English
"Are you crazy?--we will cover you, turn around
you, "imbeciles", are about to be in North Korean Prisons.
I am so glad he was speaking English, and he
went on to say our ambulance in North Korea
was not governed as safety,The cross was a target
and had we ignored the block aid we were dead
Second time we were better prepared had a compass
Once again when the fog lifted we were surrounded
The leader of South Korea had left the country
The streets were filled with angry rioters
Most who did not even know what they were angry about
They were trying to turn our ambulance over and get to us
From nowhere's Korean soldiers came and made a pass for us
We were informed to turn around and get back to the base
The base was surrounded and armed guards lead us through
I have given aid to a Airman with a knife buried in his belly
Put over a hundred stitches in a Korean attacked by dogs
Had two American Airman die in my arms trying to save them
Pulled a pilot out of the water who had crashed
Done emergency surgeries and I am not a Doctor trained
I know that those who serve our country serve in many ways
So thanks to all you on this site for recognizing our service
Some of us are not heroes but someone has to do it
And my military brothers and sister this salute if for you.
God bless the red the white and the blue every person who serves
