This is a poem I wrote for my younger brother Billy. We spent summers by the shore and those are some of my best memories of him. Sadly he is gone, but he lives on in my thoughts.
It was that summer of endless sand we shared.
The sun warm on bare skin, white grit between our toes.
Watching sea gulls dance on those gentle breezes.
Daydreaming and the scent of salt air tickling my nose.
Pails and shovels busy sculpting and shaping
turrets tall and fairy castles where knights still reign.
Laughing and playing immersed in paradise
we tore down our structures and built them again.
Beneath a sky draped with snowflake clouds
foamy waves attacked with rage and then retreated.
We waged wars with those imaginary armies.
Neither of us winning nor were we ever defeated.
I remember hearing, singing a song the ocean sang,
We ran hand in hand across that warm endless dune.
Never realizing what turns life might foist upon us.
We danced in sweet innocence and joy to life's tune.
