A Tale of a Sad Soldier

As I sat on the bus
A man across from me got my attention.
As he sat there
He stared at a picture that was fading.
And as he stared at the picture
It looked like he was seeing something horrible.
On his face there was a scar.
He never talked or looked at anyone.
All he did all day long
Was stare at the faded picture.
I couldn't stop staring
At this sad soldier.
No one paid him any attention
Or even asked what was wrong.
As the bus ride went on
He looked even sadder.
When we stopped for dinner
He walked over to me and said,
“Will you join me?
Because I am alone
And have no where to go.”
He told me the horrors of war.
He told me he was going home
But he didn't have anyone to go to.
He was in his twenties
But didn't act like it.
When I looked into his eyes
I could see all the pain and suffering
That he went through.
After the trip we both parted
But I still can remember everything
About him and the stories he told.
