Independence - Barbados

Independence

I went to London not to berate
Just my independence to negotiate
There was no doubt; I knew what I was about
Success was greeted with tumultuous shout!

Who could forget that momentous occasion?
On a rainy night at the Garrison
Whilst the Union Jack was drooping
 The trident was elegantly flying

As my richest and greatest resources, you my people
Aptly demonstrated that you were capable
That's why I used education
As the bedrock of my foundation

My little children whom I molded and ingrained
In them, the importance of being well trained
So in the face of new and changing technology
They can function most competently

Like a proud parent I duly acknowledged
All of what my children had accomplished
Sons like Grantley and Errol Bee
How my heart still grieved for young Tommy, he departed so suddenly.

Yes I will gloat; you made me proud in sports
To see my majestic Gary at the wicket
Oh! How he dominated and revolutionized test cricket
Also my Olympians in Jimmy and Obadele

You suppressed your pleasures
When I had to impose austerity measures
Amid all adversity we stood together in unity
Henceforth  into your hands my proud, industrious and illustrious children I pass this legacy.
