 Flower Children

I was wondering, where are the flower children now?
Those dropouts of the late 60's; embracers of free love.
Peaceniks in their soul, rebelling against the reality of life;
Swept away by acid rock and drugs, yet somehow gentle.
Tie dyed tee shirts, peace sign greetings, social freedom;
They effected the fringes of our tumultuous society.
Marches for peace, idealism reaching for the heavens;
Anti-war demonstrations, keeping Vietnam on our minds.

Where are the flower children, where are they now?
Have they been melted and absorbed into society;
Or are they simply burn outs, unable to function?
Do they speak with bumper stickers on their Mercedes;
Or do they even care any longer, no longer with purpose?
I always admired their idealism, their drive, and their music;
But was never able to release myself to let go and drop out.
Something always held me back, I wonder if I missed the boat.

Where are all the flower children, where have they gone?
Spending time in San Francisco just before shipping out;
Vietnam on my horizon, torn by their message of peace
And by my sense of duty to my country rooted in my soul.
I remember a time when I wished I had the courage to drop out;
But then I found the courage to do what my nation required.
My heart was molded by Vietnam, colored by flower children;
I ask, who are you now, o' flower child, what was your destiny?
