 Savannah

At midnight
In the garden she stands
Waiting for morning
A plate of bird food
In each hand
With the dead
Asleep beneath the ground
Keeping the secrets
Of that old Southern town
The bird girl of Savannah
Head bent down
Her simple dress
Touches the earth
Where good and evil are buried
