(These kids from Church of Christ came in & I asked each one to give me one word, any word they liked. From it I created this poem & read it to them by the time it was my turn at the mic.)
“Sure,”
He thought.
I could stay home
Playing my X-box…
But the night way young
And the joy
Of being home
Alone was no
Way to balance
His life…
SO…
Out into the Denver
Night he went
Finding adventure along the way
Street performers
On the 16th street mall
Juggled red apples,
Then added,
Watermelons,
And pumpkins!
They were terrific!
What a vicarious thrill!
A carnival of talent
Flooded the sidewalks,
And he was filled with
Respect for their talents.
One was a woman
Dressed as a human butterfly,
Another an Elvin man
Selling cinnamon cupcakes.
Still another was a man
Giving children
Rides upon his lama,
Who squealed with sheer joy.
The night air
Seemed the perfect
Temperature,
And amidst
The busyness
A small blue
Beatle scurried by…
And the boy
Did not know why
He felt blessed,
And found acceptance
With the life
Of the Denver street…
Full of experience,
He was ready to
Go home
& write
a little poetry.
