 Pages Of A Woman's Soul

To engage the soil
to fill one's hands with
the rich brown loam is
to feel the heartbeat of the earth
to touch its lifeblood
its very soul

To entrust a seedling
or sweet faced flower
to place it with care
into the bosom of the
newly tilled spring ground
is to believe in all
that is unseen

To sit beside
a flourishing garden
to drink in its pleasures
tended by one's own hand
one kissed by the sunlight and
tenderly watered by God's gentle rains
is to know what life means
and to come home

(For my father, who has been a gardener all his life.)
