village verse

Fun-eral

I nearly missed my mam's cremation
I was talking to cousin Fred
And I went and turned right
Not continued straight ahead
And in place of the crematorium
Got the church next door instead
There was a solemn procession
Heading to the burial ground
So I had to stop and let them pass
Disrespectful to turn straight around

The service had been so miserable
The vicar just can't have known my mam
He was talking about a stranger
Not her who made me what I am
I suppose that's another reason why
On that particular day
I lost my concentration
And went the wrong way

And I was I thinking to myself
My Mam's not dead
She's sitting up in here
Laughing in my head
I could hear her chuckle
Clearly hear her say
That daft little bugger's
Gone the wrong way
I nearly missed mam's cremation
But that diversion helped me see
I'll never be really dead
So long as folk remember me
