THE FIRST TIME I CRIED

It was the year 1939
Mom came into the room
She screamed loudly
There was a rat in my crib
The rat didn't scare me
One time she found me playing
with a Black widow spider
No I cried when the air raid
came on nightly we were poor
Mom insisted we move
My daycare, next door they
stored road construction piping
My playmates rats and bug and spiders
Age of six I took care of my younger sister
Dad he was a no show Mom had to work
She couldn't afford day care
Neighbor lady kept her until
Dandy came home from school
It was the way things were during
the war years in Seattle
The most frightful thing I would do
Someone had to start the fire or
we would freeze. I dropped the match
and Sis and I closed our eyes--Swoosh!
The next time I cried the day Mom died
I know this will bring back memories
The first day you remember crying
