 Shaft of Darkness
Crawling deep into the earth for her bounty;
Digging deeper to hit that next rich vein.
Mining out coal day after day in my life;
Coming up after my shift, sucking in fresh air.
Dangerous is my job, but I gotta feed my family;
Government regulations seem to be ignored.
Inspections come, the bosses are cited;
But nothing changes, no, it never changes.
Four more years, and I'll hang up my hardhat;
Freedom to feel the sun's warmth everyday.
My kids have grown, I got um outta this town;
Never go underground, my child, never go under.
This shift today is passing slower than most;
I move towards safety, as the gas alarm sounds.
Too often anymore, this becoming more like a drill.
Orderly we all move, not really thinking,… then a flash!

Honoring the miner's and their families in West Virginia
who lost their lives yesterday in this industrial tragedy.
