 That Little Four Letter Word

Coat it with spun sugar, make it sweetness to the taste
Armor-plate it, dedicate it to the purposes you desire
Speak it holy, speak it slowly, without a hint of haste
Present it wrapped in emotional, devotional words of fire....

Seal it tightly, sprinkle it lightly with honey-coated care
Maybe add a few raindrops from the prettiest cloud above
You may present it with coquetry to your paramour fair
Or speak low and somberly to convey your pent-up love....

Love is a word so inadequate for anything it conveys
It is such a little word to be so full of multiple meanings
But someone stuck us with it in the bygone history of days
We search among the letters smouldering in feiry embers....

Everyone agrees, even across the seas, the word is needed
But just four letters? it would be better if there were twenty
All the various meanings that to the word have been deeded
Do not suffice, though it would be nice if there were plenty....

Maybe we shouldn't use words at all, only motions and emotions
Words are only supported by the facade upon which they lean
Plus, the words needed would surely fill an entire ocean
Although I don't think a single one we would ever contravene.....
