My Old Man

Old man
I'm in love with you
I speak into your over sized ears
In love with you
An echo
I whisper
And nuzzle your coarse whiskers
Old man
I cluck as I count
All the grey hairs on your head
In love with you
A whisper
Your head so close
In the darkness
You become visible
Yesterday
A pain
Encircled your heart
Just when I
Began to think
About
An eternity
Just when I
Began to believe
In
routine
God
Circulates the list
Says the plastic flowers
Need tending
I'm not ready.
