So You Do   (May 10, 2010 written for June 1987)

***********

The man took a shower
In his clothes
Then he promptly went to bed.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Ray was sleeping in his car
Til they took his dog
And towed away his home.

He said:
I want to leave the earth quietly.

Now they measure me
By my whimpering each night.
I have pitch-perfect timing,
These are the words the nurses used
in their log that they'd write.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

They weigh you every morning
So you wear all your clothes.
You order 500 calories,
As of yet, no one's noticed, no one knows.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

The kitchen guy, he thinks I'm so damn cute
Looking for signs of life
He delivers my daily trays
He wants to be my savior in his knightly suit.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Convinced he'll find the cure,
The quack alters my medications daily and often.
The right synapses are bound to break.
He's nailed me now into my numbing coffin.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Yuppie boyfriend arrives, so I play his saccharine game.
Well-intentioned people know all that's best
Still pretending my life is special and the same.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

But the biggest clue is lost on everyone.
That my time here on earth,
like an over-ripe fruit, is well past and done.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

So, I've prepped my awaiting aluminum pod.
Even talked it over quietly with God.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

So I do.

Some things I've written can only be written about
with the passage of a great deal of time.
This was one of them. I respect the integrity,
honesty and real grit in/of this poem and the facts
and history contained within.
