So You Do   (May 10, 2010 written for June 1987)

***********

The man took a shower
In his clothes
Then he promptly went to bed.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Ray was sleeping in his car
Til they took his dog
And towed away his home.

He said:
I want to leave the earth quietly.

Now they measure you
By your whimpering every night.
You have pitch-perfect timing,
These are the words in their log
recorded by nurses by your bed.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

They weigh you every morning
So you wear all your clothes.
You order 500 calories,
As of yet, no one's noticed, no one knows.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

The kitchen guy, he thinks you're so damn cute
Looking for signs of life
He delivers your daily trays
He wants to be your savior in his knightly suit.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Convinced he'll find your cure,
The quack alters your medications daily and often.
The right synapses are bound to break.
He's nailed you now into your numbing coffin.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

Yuppie boyfriend arrives, so you play his saccharine game.
Well-intentioned people know all that's best
Pretending your life is still special and the same.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

But the biggest clue is lost on everyone.
That your time here on earth,
like an over-ripe fruit, is well past and done.

I want to leave the earth quietly.

So, you've prepped the awaiting aluminum pod.
Even talked it over quietly with God.

You want to leave the earth quietly.

So you do.
