The Silver PennyThe penny hid a secret And hid it very well. Beneath its shiny surface A story it did tell Of a promise that he made her Before he said goodbye As she handed him the penny And tried hard not to cry. She thought about the penny Traveling far and wide And wondered did he miss her, Still have it by his side? He took a wife from far away She had a husband too Yet still she wondered often Did the penny keep him true Years went by, he came on home A sick and lonely shell Only came to say goodbye His story sad to tell Now he lies asleeping No more tears to shed He left that silver penny His love for her it said He`d kept her silver penny When all else he had spent That tiny little penny Went everywhere he went Now that silver penny Is coming home to me And proudly I will keep it And it will help me see Our secret silver penny Without a word being cried Has told a lovely story Of a love that never died.
