 Visiting Ray
I was compelled to go to the hospital today;
I went to visit a former fellow coworker, Ray.
He has been battling cancer long and hard;
Entering his room, seeing him sleeping calmly.
I sat in the chair near the door and silently
Reminisced about those old days on the job.
My thoughts then turned to my own Dad;
Being Father's Day, five years now gone.
Sitting in the stillness for about 15 minutes;
Lost in thoughts, longing for those days gone by.
Ray opens his eyes and looks at me gently;
I ask him if he needs anything; he says “I'm ok.”
Quickly drifting back into his restful dreams;
I said, “See you later, Ray”, then watched his face.
Wondering if he will remember that I visited him;
Thinking that it doesn't really matter, now does it?
I smile, then walk out of the hospital room;
Outside into the hot Father's Day sunny sky.
My mind is flooded with a peaceful sensation;
As I open myself to this eternal present moment.
