Babysitter Blues

Children run wild through the house
the baby just spit up on my blouse.
toys thrown all over here and there
I'm busy following the children everywhere.

The babysitter blues I sing alone
no time to talk on the telephone.
just me, five children and a baby
can I handle it? I say maybe.

The children scream, the children cry
the children fight, I don't know why.
One of the children head for the door
I trip on a toy and fall on the floor.

I say "No" to going outside
one takes off and tries to hide.
There's a lot I can't ignore
like when one child pees on the floor.

The baby fusses I take care of her needs
by this time on a bottle she feeds.
I hold her in my arms, she falls asleep
I lay her down and then I creep.

Soon one child is crying, having a fit
the baby wakes up from the noise of it.
Break it up, it's hard to share
the fight over a toy I'm now aware.

One child screaming, another one crying
with an armful of baby I tend to them, trying.
I try to take care of all that they need
time for a meal, mouths I must feed.

Left with a mess that I have to clean
as hectic as it gets I'm not being mean.
to be heard above the noise I must shout
hard to tell what the fighting's about.

My hair messed up from all the stress
I keep busy at it nonetheless.
At the end of this hectic and busy day
I find my peace by kneeling down to pray.
