No handsome prince his face would slay
any chance at love
High above where winged fowl roosted he
called home, a man no woman could love
Yet his heart loved them none the less
Dreams were his to dream, but not to have
Deformed since birth he came into this world
to act the fool so many felt entertained by
but his heart felt different
Here is where he felt like one of them
Where laughter his would bring a much needed
smile upon a face in dire need, his
What had he done to deserve such a cruel fate
never to be looked upon by loving eyes but
his own, reflections from bucket he drank from
Stare he would upon the waters surface, knowing
he was much more than a freak, a man, one of a kind
yet no one sought his treasure
From chapel's tower he would survey his kingdom
Here he reigned supreme, King of Fools with no Queen
to make him whole
His will to live held hostage to thoughts of loving
one day, maybe today, dreams such only a fool can have
Burdened by a hunchback just added to his misery
Weight all his own causing him pain when sleep
he sought, even comfort was not to be his for this
too in life he would denied
His days alone would surmise what years to come would bring
A heart to love and to be loved none the less
Today the church bells toll, but you will not see him
For it is only his spirit that dwells there, still pulling
at heartstrings more rope
