Poetry For Everyday People

Back When A Wink Could Take Us

I have a song,

imagine,

one song,

a song that takes me back,
to my innocence,
not a full recovery
but a nice shot
of fresh kiss
on an empty wound,

it takes me back to the smell
of those days,

cold can of RC for a quarter,
Arlington, Glebe Rd, Sunoco,
TJ, Evans, slice of pizza
at the Orange Bowl,
Springfield mall,
14 st., Georgetown,

THIS IS IT.

the air, my mother's cooking,
the smell man, it takes me there,
our house, the air outside, our car,
the smell of the iron in the morning
as my father got ready for work,

snow covered,

one song,

mountain dew big gulps and beef jerky
at 7 eleven,

soccer, soccer, soccer,
girls, girls, girls,
soccer, soccer, soccer,
pinball, pinball, pinball,

a freedom like no other,

good parents give their kids that freedom,

I hear this song every now
and then,
I play it,

names pop in my head, images,
memories clear as lies
on a blank page,

back when I knew not fully
but wanted to know
so bad.
