Broken Memories

Broken memories in small things,
A child stumbles into infinity
As my eyes are blessed by you
And times that have faded into sadness.
I bought you a book you could not read;
You smiled and took it anyway,
You were always kind like that,
But my heart would not admit it.
The winter was icy, my soul was cold,
Sky filled my window like a painting,
Cloud thoughts scuttled through my mind
Your face was always in my dreams
As the days suddenly became years.
Yet still I could not admit I loved you;
It was as if I was enchanted somehow
With books and music and ideas
That dragged me down into oblivion
While all around was a distraction.

Now all has become silent again
And the flowers return to haunt me,
Though the paths are clear to walk.
Across the fields of melody
I thought I saw you in the distance-
But no-it is all my imagination,
I must be losing my grip on reality,
You never were real to me at all-
Just a restless figure in the shadows-
Stealing my love like a thief in the night.
