IMF Program
Life Oh! What a very profound institution
In it one is exposed to the many facets of an education
As each day represents a chance to face a challenge and a new era
Enshrine in the enigma of what is in the future.
For the past year or so, the focus was on the effects of the recession
As always some blame was apportioned to a particular section.
Even though this recession is rough, but some countries can say it's a mere whiff
Compared to those measure imposed on them, when they approached the IMF.
I learnt that lesson very well, when I lived in an island
Which had the misfortune of embarking on and IMF program
The main focus of the message was very direct
You have to impose measures to close that big deficit.
Then there was the imposition of some very harsh test
The very thought of them brought on such a great stress
But what seems so strange that at sometime earlier, the Prime Minister
Told the populace that the economy is performing better and better.
Then in the process a certainly level of the Civil Service actually
Got regraded, paid retroactively as there was an increase in salary.
Later as he sat to deliver the budget he said it quite plain
This is going to inflict on all of you, a great deal of pain
There will also be a form of salary reduction
Instead of as they proposed a currency devaluation.
Another situation that made lots of us quite nervous
When there were also a decrease in the numbers of the Civil Service
This sort of caught many people off guard, and were even surprise
As the thoughts were that when employed by government, it was job for life.
The trade union being aware of the grave situation
Decided to sit with government to work on a solution
They decision was that if there were two people in a house working,
If laying off, perhaps send one and not both of them packing.
What made the impact hit home so very harshly
There were increases in the rates of all the utilities
And that was not all, they also did not on anything relaxed
There were levies on salaries, increases in mortgages and also that of the land tax.
The workers responded and thry all marched as a sign of protest
Then took another day off, this was chosen as one for rest
Even this to me was treaded with some disdain and perhaps a form of mockery
Because form all those who marched money was deducted form their salaries.
Then the workers and union took another resort
The matter was taken to the law court
A loss there , then it was taken to a higher judiciary
The judgement demonstrated that whatever was done to the salary had some legality.
After all that came the stark realization
That what is done is done and one must accept the situation
So even of it got stuck in the gullet
It was quite obvious as a Hobson's choice, we all have to bite the bullet.
