We met when a mutual friend told me you needed help.
Something in your life was going terribly wrong.
I didn't know what I could do.
So I wrote a poem.
Do you remember the words?
I will always be your friend.
No circumstance is too terrible.
No need is too great.
When everyone else turns from you,
I will hold out my hand.
My shoulder will be there to catch your tears.
My arms will hold you up.
I will part your clouds and you will be my sunshine.
Do you remember?
It has been a lot of years.
Life has not been easy, but here I am.
I'm a little shorter now.
My stature is much more rotund.
I don't wear a cape anymore as I move around.
The wind hardly parts my hair, singular.
But I haven't forgotten my promise.
We don't talk as much now.
Our lives have gone separate ways.
The children have grown and mostly left home.
Still I look through the mist and see a glow.
And when the moon retreats and the dawn breaks,
The clouds part and you fill my thoughts.
I am your friend, and you are my sunshine.
