CRICKETS WERE OUR BEST FRIENDS AT NIGHT

Water Buffalo - Vietnam

Some people hated the large crickets we had in Vietnam
They thought they were most disgusting and very loud
But I'll tell you they were my best friends at night

For when out on guard duty it was a golden rule to me
When they were making noises out in front of our bunker
We knew we were safe and sound and could breathe easy

But if they suddenly stopped chirping then get ready
For in a few minutes stuff was going to hit the fan
For we certainly had an uninvited guest by our bunker

A sound was all it would take to have flares flying
Our machine gun ready to respond to our Sargent's call
As flares popped open with the brilliance of the sun

There by the barbed wire fence was a grazing water buffalo
An instant adrenaline rush eased slightly at this sight
We all let out a sigh and laughed while we stared at it

Now people can say what they want to about these crickets
As far as I'm concerned I loved them the more the better
For these guys were the best early warning system of all
