NOT BY CHOICE

SHE WAS A REAL CONTROLER
HER WORD WAS LIKE THE LAW
SHE DIDN'T CARE HOW SHE HURT YOU
HER WAY WAS ALL SHE SAW.

SHE MADE ME FEEL INFERIOR
IN SO MANY WAYS
I TRIED NOT TO CROSS HER
YOU COULD PAY FOR IT FOR DAYS

I USED TO WONDER SOMETIMES,
IF ADOPTED I COULD BE
SHE ACTED SO SUPERIOR
LIKE SHE DIDN'T REALLY LIKE ME.

I HAD NO FEELING OF SELF WORTH
I TRIED TO TOE THE LINE
AS LONG AS ALL WENT HER WAY
EVERYTHING WAS FINE.

SHE SELDOM GAVE ME CREDIT
FOR NICE THINGS I WOULD DO
SHE TOOK ME SO FOR GRANTED
I RARELY HEARD "THANK YOU".

SHE'D TELL ME WHAT SHE'D LIKE TO HAVE,
FOR GIFTS SHE'D LIKE ME TO BUY
THEN THE COLORS OR SOMETHING ELSE
WOULD BE WRONG, HOWEVER HARD I WOULD TRY.

I THINK SHE HAD A PROBLEM
SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY
SHE COULDN'T STAND HER FATHER,
I LOVED MINE SO I HAD TO PAY

SHE DIDN'T LIKE MY HUBBY
UNTIL HIS DYING DAY,
HE WAS SO NICE AND GOOD TO HER
BUT UNKIND THINGS IS WHAT SHE'D SAY

SHE HAD NO REASON TO BE LIKE THAT
HE NEVER DID HER WRONG
I FINALLY GOT SOME BACKBONE
AND HER CONTROL WAS FINALLY GONE.

SHE NEVER SEEMED TO CARE AT ALL
THE WAY SHE TREATED SOME OTHERS
WHEN SHE GREW OLD, I TOOK CARE OF HER
BUT PRAYED,-- DON'T LET ME BE LIKE MY MOTHER.
