A Soldier's LetterI lie here bloody and broken amongst the terrible carnage of the battlefield of Chancellorsville staring up at the stormy blue-gray skies above this horrible body strewn field gasping my last few breaths on earth amongst the dead and dying thinking my last mortal thoughts of you... April 28,1863 Charlotte, How I've missed you my lovely Southern Belle all these terrible days that I've been away to war.My love you are the delight of my soul and are foremost in my mind no matter where I've gone.I thought of you on the long march to this battlefield, and you were in my thoughts as the battle raged. Darling you are in my heart so I shall not fear my dying moment. I shall remember your glorious delicate kisses as I feel the cool breath of death upon my face, and go into the beyond fearlessly, knowing your eternal love shall be with me til the end. Fear not tomorrow my sweet love, for the South shall prevail in the end. Keep hold of my love for all time my darling, and remember always that we shall meet again in the great by and by. Good bye my love. Your Loving Husband Jebediah Donavon Scott Vinson A Bit of History: The Battle of Chancellorsville took place April 27 through May 6,1863 between General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac under General Hooker. The battle was won by the South, and is where General (Stonewall) Jackson was mistakenly shot in the dark by Confederate soldiers as he was returning to camp.Though his wound was healing,he died on May 10th of pneumonia at Guineys Station. Jackson was a beloved general and was survived by his wife Esposita. Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
