MONSOON SEASON IN THE MEKONG DELTA

As a gentle breeze blew past our bunker
There was a cool mist that followed it
It gradually became a steady downpour
It brought relief from the daytime heat
But it didn't let up it's steady pace
We were now facing a full blown monsoon
It starts gently then continues to build
In awhile we couldn't see more than 5 feet
It may let up a little every now and then
But the downpour never really stops at all
Soon everything becomes this flooded mess
And you're up to your knees in this water
Water flooded the rice paddies and canals
Bringing with it creatures and deadly snakes
All were searching for a piece of dry land
Invading our bunkers looking for a reprieve
The monsoon rains continue for days on end
Never had I seen that much rain or flooding
You just couldn't stay dry out there while on duty
To try and see the enemy out there was impossible
Then there was mother nature and her deadly snakes
Monsoon season in Southeast Asia really sucked
One of the most unpleasant times of my life
Especially down there in the vast Mekong Delta
