Miss Brown's Dress
I can remember this moment as a child
That now after many years I can still smile
But the time that it had happened
It was not a very happy occasion
My mother among her many gifts
Could on some occasions work as a seamstress
One day she was to face a very big test
Of making a dress for a woman who was fussy and a real pest.
She took the material and placed it on the table
Recorded the measurements in her book, wrote them quite legible
The she laid the cloth out and started cutting to specification
But during the process she had to leave to handle another situation
Leaving her scissors still in the fabric
Somehow I thought it was sign for me to complete it
So there I was snipping, smiling and cutting so happily
Beaming as i thought she will be so happy as her work was made easy
When she returned my she was so surprise
There was anger and fire burning in her eyes
My cutting was such that there was such damage
I could see there was nothing there that she could salvage.
My what were you were thinging at all
There cloth is so cut up, cannot even make a dress for a doll
But most of all what will i tell Miss Brown
You know she will make this headlines through the town
You will hear her tell all the rest
Mary cannot even make a doll's dress
I gave her a dress to make so as to build her a reputation
Believe me she cannot even cut cloth to make a pin cushion.
What I will have to do is go to town very early
Buy the cloth and get back here quickly
Because you can rest assured as soon as its is eight
She will be knocking down the gate.
Now my little man here is your test
Since your enthusiasm created the mess
You must know how much i will appreciate
If you can find a way to keep her away until after eight
This made me smile and she could see my delight
Because I know what would do just right
Once i passed and saw on her face a look of pure terror
It was of frogs that she had a great phobia.
So when my mother left on her trip to town
I know exactly what has to be done
Taking a bit of her cloth and wrapped three frog neatly
I heard her coming and it was almost eight precisely
When she saw the frogs and in bits of her cloth
She froze her mouth opened and she began to froth
Spinning around and retracing her steps, this time at a great speed
Voice breaking as she said tell your mother the dress i do not now need
That now after many years I can still smile
But the time that it had happened
It was not a very happy occasion
