Poetic Verses

Shelter Cat

My first memory is something warm
although there is nothing can I see
I know for sure there is a form
maybe my mother is close to me

I hear sounds I don't understand
and feel something taking me away
I feel textures of rough and hard and sand
and begin to focus fuzzy shades of gray

The word I hear most is called "no"
and always with a slap upon my side
My furry family one by one go
until the day they take ME for a ride

I cry and claw at this small dark space
I hurt and I tremble with much fear
until I see a smiling lady's face
it's her soft sweet words that I now hear

I don't trust people's hands that touch me
I'm afraid of all things brought to my cage
I think if the door opens I might flee
and if stopped I'll claw and bite in my rage

I'm scared of all the loud sounds that I hear
and don't like the people who come to stare
sometimes I just tremble in fear
yet something tells me some of them do care

I've met a furry pal or two next door
and I have learned with new toys to play
I've even got to run upon the floor
but one by one my pals all go away

Inside this small cage long I stay
but no one seems to want this shelter cat
The nice lady points people my way
and when they pass I lay upon my mat

But every night the lady shuts the light
and as she locks up the front door
I hear her say it isn't right
that I shouldn't have to be here any more

I dream at night when I go to sleep
"forever home" is what I'm longing for
My people come and pick me out to keep
to love and keep me safe forevermore
