We can learn so much from a family tree
With important and documented history
By tracing marriages and children born
It is the same with our Savior and Lord
Matthew includes five women in his list
Upon reading their names I noticed this
They were all ordinary like you and me
Each used by God, He wanted us to see
Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah
Two wicked husbands killed by God too
She seduced Judah disguised as a harlot
Perez, line of Boaz, was born by that plot
Rahab was a harlot who lived in Jericho
Hiding the spies of Joshua, we are told
Later, mother of Boaz, wife of Salmon
In Hebrews 11, her faith revealed to men
Ruth was a foreigner from the land of Moab
With great devotion to mother-in-law Naomi
Followed Naomi back to Israel her homeland
Ruth married Boaz, who was their hired hand
Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite
Bathed on the roof, naked in plain sight
David saw her with lust and had an affair
Child is born and dies, result of sins to bare
Mary, the wife of Joseph, mother of Jesus
Virgin conceived by the Spirit we know this
She was a humble servant chosen by God
But not without sin on the path that she trod
Jesus, called son of David and Lion of Judah
Reveals His lineage, fulfilling prophecy, too
Census sent His parents back to their homeland
Jesus was born in a stable, no room in the inn
Each woman had a very special part in His plan
To provide the way to redeem the sins of man
I believe God saw their repentant heart within
Despite their faults, He forgave all their sin
God has a plan for each of our lives as well
By His Holy Spirit who in all believers dwell
He uses ordinary people willing to obey His call
To spread His message of hope to one and all
