Poetic Verses
Language
There are timnes in my younger days I will never forget
No satellite T.V., so will sit listening to test cricket
following the game via the voices of the commentators, but the best of the lot
Was a man who made you come alive, he was none other than John Arlott
He used words phrases that were so descriptive
Demonstrating that he had a good command of the language
And it his special manner of articulation
Made one felt as though one has a speical seat in the pavillion
Then after the day's play was done
One was enthralled by the summary of Mr. Swanson
Taking listeners back through the day's play
Sort of teacbing precis in a way.
Let us look at some of the sportmen of that day
Those who can remember, Ali, Sobers and the great Pele
Their feats in their domains, made the commentator
Press to find words to use from that language repertoire.
I will not hesitate to say, nothing now can ever replicate
The level and quality of those lively parliamentary debates
The use of language by the leader of the opposition
As he dissected the speeches of his opponents, with such surgical precision.
Who can forget the method employed by the songwriter
Using that language as he cleverly painted his picture
Words and expression, that suit the listen's frame of mind
So it will be retained for a very long time.
Some may say now, as we are privy to the updated technology
It is not now the language, but people are more captivated by what they see.
Even though there is that visual impact, one can see that language quality
Is still the hallmark and an important feature of the BBC.
Today getting most people to understand and use the correct language
Is on that is proving to be somewhat of a challenge
Because the children seem not to be able to make that differntion
Between their text language and the one used in the school situation.
