I raised her to be respectful, I raised her to be proud
I raised her to be independent, different from the crowd
I raised her to love God, I raised her to try
I raised her to follow her dreams and reach for the sky
I raised her through tough love, I raised her as best I could
I raised her with discipline, I raised her to be good
But in all the I raised her to do and to be
I didn’t know how to raise her to love me
I didn’t know how to tell her that I was afraid
I didn’t know how to confess the mistakes that I made
I didn’t know how to be loving, gentle, or kind
I didn’t know how to trust in the thoughts in her mind
I didn’t know how to deal with each new age
I didn’t know how to calm my rage
In all that I didn’t know, and all I couldn’t see
I never envisioned the she wouldn’t love me
At the time it didn’t matter, at the time I didn’t care
At the time I thought my job was to prepare
At the time I was to teach, at the time I was to protect
At the time I saw the bills, at the time I saw the check
At the time I saw the world, at the time I was so scared
At the time I saw time take those unprepared
Each time death would visit I thought " soon he’ll come for me"
At that time I didn’t think it important that she loved me
My goal was her future, my goal was her success
My goal was her survival, my goal was her best
My goal was her mind set, my goal was her choices
My goal was her obedience to heavenly voices
My goal was her ability to live well, and live on
My goal was for her to have goals when I was gone
So concern about the responsibility before me
I almost made it impossible for her love to be
To my surprise I’m still here, to my surprise I survived
To my surprise she has grown up and I’m still alive
To my surprise I didn’t totally drive her away
To my surprise she is here with me today
To my surprise she understands the dad I tried to be
And to my surprise I literally cry because I know she loves me
