TIDES OF TIME
Fleet as a flood swollen river,
the days and nights roll past
inexorable and heartlessly
the years go by so fast
At first in youth, it's a trickle
a rill running far too slow
we long to push our lives along,
shoot the rapids as we go
Our brook becomes a streambed
as into adults we mature
still pushing to move on faster
the future beckons, ensured
Then suddenly that calm stream
turns into a rushing cascade
with love, and work, and children
a swift river of life is made
Bobbing along on the current
we don't see the shore flying past
too busy to seize the moments
we drown in the sea we've amassed
And just as abrupt as a torrent
our declining years arrive
try as we might to slow them
or stave them off, or contrive
Each of us navigates a life
sailing on personal seas
Time, unrelenting, flows onward
an ocean's eternity…
