SHINE
Light shines into the heart
in small, faint glimmers,
piercing through the shadowy
chambers of the soul
struggling to work its way
into the deepest reaches
of the damaged psyche…
…not an easy task
Dwelling in the negative
is a tendency the mind fights,
but pain and fear are tenacious,
pushing radiance aside
like a schoolyard bully
not making room within
for hope, or joy, or love…
…but grapple we must
As darkness begets darkness,
so too, light begets light
and without the spark of
positive thought the world
grows colder and devoid,
yet the heart grows luminescent
with the solace kindness brings
…ever vigilant should we be
Until the tide turns and we
overcome collective sorrow
we will keep groping,
insensate, ever crying,
"victim am I " when
all it would take is
to choose to shine
